What is ASTM standard for air permeability test?
2023/07/20
ASTM air permeability test standards are a series of test methods and specifications developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International) to evaluate the air permeability of materials. Air permeability refers to the ability of gas to transmit in a material, usually measured by air permeability. Air permeability testing standards can be applied to a variety of materials including textiles, paper, films, coatings, plastics, rubber, and more.
The purpose of the ASTM air permeability test standard is to provide a standardized method to ensure that different laboratories can obtain consistent and comparable results when testing air permeability. These standards cover different types of air permeability tests, including gas permeability tests, moisture vapor permeability tests, and water vapor permeability tests, among others.

Among them, the gas permeability test is one of the most common air permeability test methods. ASTM D737 is a commonly used gas permeability test standard for materials such as textiles, paper, films and coatings. This standard requires that the material to be tested is fixed in a gas permeability testing apparatus, a certain pressure difference is applied across the surface of the material, and then the rate of gas passing through the material is measured. According to the test results, indicators such as air permeability and air permeability can be calculated.
Moisture vapor permeability testing is a method of evaluating the breathability of materials under wet conditions. ASTM E96 is a commonly used moisture vapor transmission test standard for materials such as textiles, paper, films and coatings. The standard requires the material to be tested to be fixed in a humidity-controlled test apparatus, a certain humidity difference is applied across the surface of the material, and the rate at which the moisture passes through the material is measured. According to the test results, indicators such as moisture vapor transmission rate and moisture vapor transmission rate can be calculated.
The water vapor permeability test is a method to evaluate the water vapor transmission performance of materials. ASTM E96 can also be used for water vapor permeability testing. By adjusting test conditions and calculation methods, indicators related to moisture vapor permeability can be obtained.
ASTM air permeability test standards have a wide range of applications and can help material manufacturers, R&D personnel and quality control personnel evaluate the air permeability of materials to ensure that they meet specific requirements and application scenarios. The development and compliance of these standards help to improve the quality and performance of materials and facilitate the smooth conduct of international trade.
