Tensile Testing of Textile Fabrics in Accordance with ASTM D 5034

ASTM D 5034 is a standard test method published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) for evaluating the strength and elongation properties of fabric bonded materials. The standard test method is applicable to all types of fabrics, including knitted fabrics, woven fabrics, nonwovens, and composites. This article describes how to perform a tensile test on textile fabrics according to ASTM D 5034.
Fabric Tensile Testing Machines
Step 1: Prepare the test sample
According to ASTM D 5034, the test specimen should be in the shape of a long strip with an aspect ratio between 5:1 and 10:1, and should be weighted prior to testing to eliminate uneven stress distribution. The following points need to be kept in mind when preparing the samples:

Step 2: Mounting the Test Specimen
Mount the test sample in the fixture of the tensile tester. The fixture should clamp the sample and ensure that the sample does not slide or shift during the test. The following points need to be kept in mind when clamping the sample in the fixture:
- The fixture should fit the size and shape of the sample to ensure that the sample can be adequately stretched.
- The fixture should clamp the sample and avoid any additional stress or deformation during the test.
- Suitable fixture spacers or sample protection material should be used between the fixture and the sample to avoid damage to the sample while the fixture is holding it.
 
Step 3: Perform Tensile Test
Start the tensile testing machine and set the test parameters according to ASTM D 5034, including loading rate, load range and test temperature. When performing the tensile test, the following points need to be noted:
- The test should be conducted in accordance with ASTM D 5034 to ensure the accuracy and comparability of the test results.
- The load should be increased gradually until the sample breaks or the desired test load range is reached.
- Load-elongation curves should be recorded during the test to evaluate the strength and elongation properties of the sample.
- At the end of the test, parameters such as breaking load and elongation should be recorded to assess the strength and elongation properties of the samples.
 
Step 4: Analyze the test results
