The oxygen index is one of the most important indicators of the flame retardancy of solid materials. It is the lowest oxygen concentration at which a material can sustain combustion under certain conditions. Oxygen index testing is a common flame retardant testing technique widely used in construction, electronics, automotive, aerospace and other fields.

Oxygen index testing can be used to determine the flame retardancy of a material by measuring its burning characteristics in a high oxygen environment. For the test, a sample is placed in a burner and pure oxygen is added inside. After the sample is ignited, the oxygen concentration inside the burner is maintained at a specific concentration, usually 21% or 40%. During combustion, the heat generated by the combustion causes spontaneous combustion of the sample and the combustion reaction continues until the sample is completely burned out or the oxygen inside the burner is consumed.

During combustion, the oxygen index can be calculated by measuring the change in oxygen concentration. As the material burns, the oxygen concentration decreases over time until it is consumed. Based on the change in oxygen concentration during combustion, the oxygen index of a material can be calculated.

Oxygen index testing can help determine the flame retardancy of a material and provide manufacturers with guidance on improving their products. For example, in the construction and electronics industries, the results of oxygen index testing of materials are often used to develop safety standards and specifications for products to ensure that they do not cause fires or other safety problems during use and transportation.

In addition to oxygen index testing, there are a number of other common flame retardant testing techniques, including vertical burn testing, horizontal burn testing, locomotive testing, and microwave radiation testing. These testing techniques can be used to evaluate the flame retardancy of materials and help manufacturers improve the flame retardancy of their products.
