What is the difference between Taber and Martindale?
2023/08/10
Taber and Martindale are two commonly used abrasion resistance testing methods and corresponding instruments. They are primarily used to evaluate the abrasion resistance of fabrics, textiles, leather, carpets and other materials. Here are the differences between them:
Taber test:
The Taber test is performed using a Taber Abrasion Tester, which is a rotating platform type tester. The Taber test machine is mainly used to measure the wear of materials on a rotating platform by a rotating abrasive wheel. During testing, a material sample is fixed on a rotating platform, and then a tangential force is applied to an abrasive wheel, which scratches and wears the sample.
Taber testing can provide quantitative and qualitative data on a material's wear resistance, wear volume, surface changes and durability. It is widely used to evaluate the abrasion resistance of coatings, coatings, plastics, metals and other materials.
Martindale test:
The Martindale test was performed using a Martindale Abraser, which is a reciprocating friction tester. The Martindale Abraser simulates real-world wear by reciprocating friction and pressure on the material. During the test, the material sample is fixed on a circular friction head and undergoes reciprocating friction under a specific load and friction cycle.
The Martindale test is primarily used for the evaluation of abrasion resistance of textiles, fabrics and soft materials. It can provide quantitative and qualitative data on the wear degree, durability and wear resistance of the material surface. The Martindale test is widely used in the textile industry to evaluate the abrasion resistance, fabric density, fabric structure and fabric quality of fabrics.
In general, the Taber test is more suitable for the abrasion resistance evaluation of hard materials, coatings and plastics, etc., while the Martindale test is more suitable for the abrasion resistance evaluation of textiles and soft materials. Different test methods and instrumentation options depend on the specific material type, test requirements and the nature of the data required.
