What is the purpose of a crockmeter?

 

The primary application of a crockmeter is in the textile industry, particularly during the quality control and evaluation of dyed or printed fabrics. It helps determine the potential for color bleeding or transfer onto other surfaces, such as clothing, upholstery, or accessories, when the fabric is rubbed against them.

 

The crockmeter consists of a reciprocating arm with a fixed load, which rubs a specified area of the test fabric against a standard white or colored fabric or paper. The rubbing action mimics everyday wear and tear or repeated contact between different textile surfaces. After the rubbing process, the amount of color transfer or staining on the standard fabric is visually assessed or measured using a spectrophotometer.
