How do you do a rub resistance test?
2023/08/24
A rub resistance test, also known as an abrasion test or wear test, is conducted to evaluate the fabric's ability to withstand surface rubbing or abrasion. One widely used method for rub resistance testing is the Martindale abrasion test, which I will outline below:
1. Sample Preparation: Cut fabric samples into circular shapes with specified dimensions. It is recommended to test multiple samples for accurate results.
2. Conditioning: Condition the fabric samples in a controlled environment to stabilize their moisture content and temperature. Follow specified standards or guidelines for conditioning conditions.

3. Test Apparatus: Set up the Martindale abrasion testing machine, which typically includes a circular specimen holder, a weighted rubbing head, and an abrasive material (e.g., a piece of wool or abrasive fabric) attached to the rubbing head.
4. Test Procedure:
a. Fix the fabric sample onto the specimen holder, ensuring it is taut and covers the entire rubbing area.
b. Place the abrasive material on top of the fabric sample and secure it with the rubbing head.
c. Set the required test parameters such as the number of rub cycles or the end-point criteria.
d. Start the test by activating the machine, causing the rubbing head to move in a circular motion while exerting a specified force on the fabric sample.
e. The rubbing action causes the fabric to abrade against the abrasive material, simulating the wear and tear it may undergo during actual use.
f. Monitor the progress of the test and record any noticeable fabric changes, such as pilling, fuzzing, color loss, or visible damage.
g. Continue the rubbing cycles until the test endpoint is reached or until a specific threshold of fabric wear is achieved.
5. Calculation and Reporting: Report the test results based on the observed fabric performance, including the number of rub cycles endured before specific damage occurred or any visible changes in appearance. Some testing standards may provide criteria or grading systems for evaluating the fabric's abrasion resistance.
It's important to note that different standards or guidelines may have specific variations of the test method or alternative test equipment that could be used for rub resistance testing. Additionally, specific industries or applications may have their own standardized testing methods. For accurate and consistent results, it is advisable to follow recognized testing standards, consult industry guidelines, or rely on the expertise of testing laboratories or fabric manufacturers.
If you require precise and validated rub resistance values for a particular fabric, it's recommended to refer to relevant standards, consult experts, or approach testing laboratories with specialized equipment and experience.
