The standard for BFE (Bacterial Filtration Efficiency) testing is ASTM F2101 - "Standard Test Method for Evaluating Bacterial Filtration Efficiency of Medical Mask Materials Using Staphylococcus aureus Bioaerosols". This standard specifies the steps and requirements for measuring the bacterial filtration efficiency of medical mask materials.

As directed by the ASTM F2101 standard, BFE testing consists of the following steps:

1. Sample preparation: Cut the sample of medical mask material to an appropriate size, and ensure the integrity and reliability of the sample.

2. Bacterial aerosol preparation: Prepare bacterial aerosol challenge substances using appropriate bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus.

3. Test device setup: Fix the sample on the test device to ensure the leak tightness.

4. Challenge test: By setting a specific gas flow rate, let the bacterial aerosol pass through the sample. Downstream air samples are collected and used for subsequent bacterial analysis.

5. Bacterial Analysis: Using quantitative analysis or other appropriate methods, analyze the collected samples to determine downstream (after filtration) and upstream (before filtration) bacterial counts.

6. BFE calculation: Calculate the percentage of bacterial filtration efficiency by comparing the upstream (before filtration) and downstream (after filtration) bacterial counts.

BFE (%) = (number of bacteria filtered out / number of bacteria upstream) × 100

The ASTM F2101 standard provides specifications for the test method of bacterial filtration efficiency of medical mask materials to ensure that products such as medical masks can effectively filter bacteria. This helps ensure the safety and efficacy of these products and has important implications for manufacturers and regulators.
