What is the test method of rubbing fastness?

In the test of colour fastness to rubbing, the test specimen is rubbed with a white crock test cloth under controlled conditions. The amount of colour transferred to the white crock test cloth is assessed by comparing it with the greyscale.


The test method for rubbing fastness, also known as colorfastness to rubbing, varies depending on the specific standard or organization conducting the test. However, one commonly used method is the AATCC (American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists) Test Method 8 or ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 105-X12.
 
In the AATCC Test Method 8, a rubbing cloth or rubbing tester equipped with a specified rubbing head is used. The fabric specimen is securely fixed to a testing table or holder. A rubbing motion is applied using a controlled force and a specific number of rubs, typically back-and-forth or in a circular motion. After the rubbing, any color transfer onto the rubbing cloth or staining on the specimen is evaluated visually or using a colorimeter, depending on the requirements of the standard.
 
ISO 105-X12, on the other hand, utilizes a fairly similar method. It involves using a standard rubbing fabric or rubbing finger that is subjected to a specified rubbing pressure and a specific number of rubs on the specimen. The fabric is then visually assessed for any color transfer or staining.
 
Rubbing fastness testing is performed to assess the resistance of a fabric's color to rubbing or abrasion. It helps determine if the color of a textile material will transfer onto other surfaces or fade due to rubbing during normal use or laundering. The specific test conditions and evaluation criteria may vary depending on the standard or application requirements.
