Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) is a measure of how effectively a face mask can filter out bacteria from the air. It is an essential performance indicator used to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of medical and surgical masks, particularly in healthcare settings.
BFE is expressed as a percentage and represents the mask's ability to filter bacteria particles of a certain size. The test to determine BFE involves exposing the mask material to an aerosol containing a known concentration of bacterial particles. Comparing the concentration of bacteria before and after passing through the mask allows the calculation of BFE.
In the testing process, a mask sample is subjected to a challenge aerosol containing Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (commonly used for BFE testing) at a specified flow rate. The concentration of bacteria upstream and downstream of the mask is then measured. BFE is calculated using the formula:
BFE (%) = (Number of bacteria filtered out / Number of bacteria upstream) x 100
The higher the BFE percentage, the better the mask's ability to filter and block bacterial particles. For example, a mask with a BFE of 95% means that it can filter out 95% of the bacteria in the test aerosol.
BFE testing is crucial in ensuring the quality and performance of masks, especially in medical and surgical settings where the prevention of bacterial contamination is critical. Masks with a high BFE value are preferred as they provide improved protection for both medical professionals and patients.
It's important to note that BFE specifically measures the mask's ability to filter bacteria and does not evaluate its effectiveness against other types of particles, such as viruses or particulate matter. Additional testing and certifications are used to assess those aspects, such as Viral Filtration Efficiency (VFE) and Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE).
When purchasing masks, especially those intended for medical use, it is advisable to check for BFE ratings and ensure compliance with relevant standards set by regulatory bodies, such as the ASTM International or the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). These organizations establish guidelines and requirements for mask performance, including BFE testing.
