Breathability is very important for shoes to help keep your feet comfortable and prevent them from sweating. Assessing the breathability of shoes is usually done using a device called a water vapor permeability tester.

The water vapor permeability tester is an instrument that measures the permeability of a material. It simulates the ability of water vapour to pass through a material, such as a shoe fabric, and quantifies that permeability.

The following are the general steps and methodology for evaluating shoe permeability using the water vapor permeability tester:

1. Sample Preparation:
   - Obtain a representative sample from the shoe. Typically the back or upper material of the shoe is selected for testing.
   - Ensure that the sample meets the dimensional requirements of the test, usually a round or square sample of a fixed size.

2. Instrument Setup:
   - Place the sample in the test area of the water vapor permeability tester.
   - The instrument creates a humidity gradient so that one side has high humidity and the other side has low humidity, during which the water vapour permeability is measured.

3. The test is conducted:
   - After starting the test, water vapour penetrates the surface of the sample and condenses on the high humidity side.
   - The instrument measures the amount of water vapour that passes through the sample over a certain period of time and the transmission rate data is obtained from the humidity sensor reading.

4. Data analysis and interpretation of results:
   - Based on the measurement results of the test instrument, the water vapour transmission rate value of the sample can be obtained.
   - Normally, the transmission rate is expressed in grams of water vapour per square metre per 24 hours (g/m²/24h). Higher values indicate better permeability of the material.
Water Vapor Permeability
The water vapor permeability tester provides quantitative indicators of the permeability of shoe materials. These indicators can be used to compare the breathability of different shoe materials and to assess whether the manufacturer's claims of breathability are in line with expectations.

It should be noted that the water vapour transmission rate test is only one way to assess the breathability of shoes, and there are other factors affecting the breathability, such as the overall design of the shoe, the insole and the sole material, and so on. Therefore, when choosing shoes, apart from the breathability test results, the overall comfort and the environment in which the shoes are applicable should also be considered. It is best to fully assess the breathability performance of shoes through personal experience and consumer reviews.
