How do you measure elasticity of fabric?
2023/10/27
Measuring the elasticity of fabrics usually involves aspects such as elasticity, elongation and resilience. The following is a list of commonly used test methods.
1. Tension elasticity test: This test is usually performed by a specialised tensiometer. You hold the sample in two sections of the apparatus and gradually apply pressure until a certain elongation is reached. The pressure is then reduced to allow the sample to return. Based on the length of the fabric after stretching and the length after recovery, you can calculate the elasticity elasticity and resilience of the fabric.
2. Bending Recovery Test: This test measures the ability of a fabric to recover after bending. In some cases, this elasticity is of greater concern because it can affect the comfort and wrinkle-resistant properties of the fabric. During the test, a fabric sample is subjected to a series of bends and then the degree of recovery is measured.
3. Compression Elasticity Test: Compression elasticity measures the extent to which a fabric is able to recover when loosened after being subjected to pressure. This usually involves applying a certain amount of pressure to the fabric and then subtracting the pressure to see how far the fabric will recover.
4. shear deformation recovery test: Shear deformation recovery is a test of the elasticity of a fabric when subjected to a force parallel to the face. This is measured by attaching a sample to the test apparatus and when a force parallel to the face is applied and then released to see if the sample returns to its original position.
All of the above tests will provide information about the elasticity of a fabric, but whichever method is used, the final data needs to be interpreted by a professional. This is because the elasticity of a fabric is affected by many factors, including the type of fibre, the method of weaving, the dyeing and treatment process, and so on. So interpreting this data requires an in-depth understanding of these variables.
