What is the ASTM F88 method?
2023/10/31
ASTM F88 is a standard test method published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) that is used to measure the seal strength of flexible barrier materials, such as packaging films, pouches, and bags. The test is conducted by applying a tensile load to a sealed specimen and measuring the force required to separate the seal.
The ASTM F88 test method provides a standardized procedure to ensure consistent and reliable measurements of seal strength. Here is a summary of the key steps involved in the ASTM F88 method:
1. Specimen preparation:
Cut specimens from the test material, ensuring they include the sealed area. The size and shape of the specimen depend on the requirements of the specific application and packaging configuration.
2. Equipment setup:
Set up a tensile testing machine equipped with appropriate grips for holding the specimen. The equipment should be capable of applying a constant rate of extension to the specimen.
3. Calibration:
Calibrate the testing machine according to the manufacturer's instructions to ensure accurate force measurements.
4. Test procedure:
Place the specimen between the grips of the testing machine, aligning the seal perpendicular to the direction of the applied force. Ensure the grips adequately capture the specimen and prevent slippage during the test.
5. Test conditions:
The test is typically conducted at a specified temperature and humidity, as these factors can affect the seal strength of the material. The specific conditions should be defined based on the requirements of the application or industry standards.
6. Execution of the test:
Initiate the test by applying a constant rate of extension to the specimen until the seal separates. The crosshead speed often used is typically 12 inches (300 mm) per minute.
7. Data recording:
During the test, record the maximum force required to separate the seal. This value represents the seal strength.
8. Data analysis:
Calculate the average seal strength from multiple specimens if required. Compare the obtained values with the specified acceptance criteria, which may be defined in product standards, regulations, or customer requirements.
It is important to note that the ASTM F88 method provides a standardized procedure for measuring seal strength and does not address other aspects of package integrity, such as seal integrity under different environmental conditions or package opening and resealing characteristics.
To ensure accurate and reliable results, it is recommended to follow the specific requirements of ASTM F88, including specimen preparation, equipment setup, and test conditions.
