Jordan's garment and textile industry is facing serious difficulties
2021/10/14
According to the latest report of the "Jordan Times", on September 24, representatives of the clothing and textile industry in Jordan asked the government to reconsider including the clothing and textile industry in the "list of industries in the hardest-hit areas."
In a telephone interview, Muneer Deyeh, chairman of the Jordanian Textile and Apparel Federation, said that in May the clothing and textile industry was listed by the government as an “industry in the hardest-hit areas of the epidemic”. Measures such as rent reduction and tariff reduction to help the industry reduce the negative impact of the epidemic. However, since being included in the list in May, the only benefit to the apparel and textile industry is to cut workers’ wages by 20% or allow workers to return home for only half of their wages-not less than Jordan’s minimum wage, based on an agreement reached between employers and employees. 220 about the first.
Deyeh said that August and September this year were the most difficult months in the history of the apparel and textile industry, and sales in many stores were basically zero. Without liquidity, employers cannot afford operating costs and wages. The government has not yet provided any clear plans to help the industry save itself.

Labor Minister Nidal Batayena stated that many industries, such as the apparel and textile industry, are not currently on the "list of industries hardest hit by the epidemic", so the government needs to establish a joint committee to periodically reassess the latest situation in the industry.
Deyeh believes that by staying in the "list of enterprises in the hardest-hit areas", the garment and textile industry will benefit from the government's support policies in the future. The current lack of liquidity of garment enterprises, poor economic conditions, and declining sales-all these should make the garment and textile industry Become an industry in the hardest hit area. If there is not enough working capital, it will be difficult for employers to pay their financial expenses and workers’ wages in accordance with the law.
Asaad Qawasmi, representative of the clothing, clothing and jewelry industries of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, said that the government's removal of the clothing and textile industry from the "list of industries in the worst-hit areas" will have a greater impact on the clothing and textile industry. The clothing and textile industry is struggling, and small businesses have closed down. This should be the standard for industries that are listed as the hardest-hit areas.
