Daily Express: Cotton production in Mali, Africa, falls sharply

Mali's 2021/22 seed cotton production fell nearly 79 percent year-on-year to 147,200 tonnes, Prime Minister Moctar Ouane said on Thursday, partly due to lower plantings due to the price slump caused by the new crown pneumonia.

Cotton prices fell to their lowest levels since 2009 after the outbreak of the coronavirus last April. The price of seed cotton has dropped significantly.
In addition, the removal of some agricultural subsidies has also contributed to the decline in cotton production in Mali.
Mali, one of Africa's four largest cotton producers, along with Chad, Benin and Burkina Faso, was initially expected to produce 820,000 tonnes of seed cotton this season, compared with 700,000 tonnes in the previous season.
